It’s almost 2025- Are travel agents still a thing? Since announcing my new endeavor of becoming a Travel Advisor, I have repeatedly heard some of the same comments and questions. So today, I would love to address some of these and share information about why supporting small business travel advisors is so important.

Are Travel Agents still a thing?

YES!!! Supporting a travel agent (like me!) directly contributes to the success of their small business in several meaningful ways:

1. Commission-Based Income
Travel agents typically earn their income through commissions paid by hotels, cruise lines, tour operators, and other travel suppliers when they book services on your behalf. By booking through a travel agent, you’re helping them earn their livelihood without paying extra since these commissions are built into the cost.

2. Encourages Entrepreneurial Growth
Many travel agents are independent contractors or small business owners who rely on client support to sustain and grow their businesses. Your booking helps them reinvest in tools, training, and marketing, allowing them to serve their clients better.

3. Word-of-Mouth Referrals
Positive experiences with a travel agent often lead to referrals, which are critical for small business growth. When you choose and recommend a travel agent, you’re helping them expand their network and reach more clients.

4. Personalized Customer Service
Travel agents provide tailored advice and handle complex logistics, which large corporations often cannot replicate. By supporting them, you endorse the value of personalized, high-quality service over impersonal online booking platforms.

5. Local Economic Impact
Many travel agents live and operate in your community, so supporting their business keeps money circulating locally, benefiting your local economy.

6. Recognition and Stability
Regular bookings and loyalty provide agents with stability and recognition in the travel industry, which can lead to better deals and partnerships for their clients.

Supporting a travel agent is more than just a transaction—it’s investing in someone’s dream, expertise, and the personal touch they bring to creating memorable travel experiences.

Why You Should Hire a Travel Agent for Your Next Trip

Planning a trip can be exciting but also overwhelming. There is much to consider, including researching destinations, accommodations, and activities. In today’s digital age, relying on online tools to plan your travels is tempting. However, a travel agent can provide valuable expertise and convenience that might make your trip easier and more enjoyable.

1. Expertise and Experience
Travel agents are professionals with extensive knowledge about destinations, hotels, and activities. They know what to do and, just as importantly, what to avoid. Whether you’re looking for an all-inclusive resort, a hidden gem off the beaten path, or a custom itinerary just right for you, a travel agent can offer expert recommendations that save you time and help you make the most of your vacation.

Did you know?

Most travel suppliers (like hotels, cruise lines, and tour operators) have a built-in commission structure in their pricing, regardless of whether you book directly or through a travel advisor. Here’s why:

Commission is Built Into Pricing

  • Travel suppliers typically include commission costs in their pricing models, incentivizing travel advisors to promote and sell their products.
  • If you book directly with the supplier, the commission amount is not removed; it simply goes unclaimed, benefiting the supplier’s bottom line.

No Additional Cost to You

  • When you use a travel advisor, you’re not paying extra for their service (my services are always complimentary). The commission comes from the supplier’s marketing budget, not your wallet.

2. Time-Saving Convenience
Planning a trip involves a lot of time and energy. You have to research accommodations, local transportation, activities, and dining options while ensuring everything aligns with your budget and timeline. A travel agent takes care of these details, saving you hours of research. Instead of scrolling through endless reviews and travel blogs, you can rely on their expertise to create an itinerary tailored to your preferences.

3. Access to Exclusive Deals and Perks
Travel agents often have access to industry networks and frequently receive exclusive deals unavailable to the general public. These perks include discounted hotel rates, room upgrades, special amenities, or VIP access to events or attractions.

4. Personalized Recommendations
Travel agents take the time to get to know you and your travel preferences. Whether planning a romantic getaway, a family vacation, or a solo adventure, an experienced agent can suggest destinations and activities that perfectly align with your interests. They can also provide insider tips about local culture, dining hotspots, and hidden gems you might not find in a standard travel guide.

5. Problem-Solving and Support
Travel is full of unexpected twists—flights are delayed, hotels are overbooked, or you might need to change your itinerary last minute. When you book through a travel agent, you have a professional on your side who can handle these issues for you. Having someone in your corner can give you peace of mind and make your trip smoother.

Why not trust someone who loves to plan and travel?

While booking your trip online may seem like the quickest and easiest option, a travel agent can offer much more than just convenience. Their expertise, personalized service, and problem-solving ability can enhance your travel experience, making it smoother, more affordable, and more enjoyable.

Next time you’re gearing up for a vacation, consider enlisting my help. With my knowledge and support, you can focus on what truly matters—enjoying your time away from home.

If you choose not to use a travel advisor, the commission built into the price stays with the supplier—so why not take advantage of a professional’s expertise?

Even if you have booked all of your trips on your own over the years and know exactly what you are looking to do on vacation, you can still book through my free services and get the exact trip you want while supporting my small business – I would LOVE the experience and to help you see the world while building my new path in life! Please don’t hesitate to contact me or share my information with friends and family.  I’m here, ready and waiting to work with you!

  1. Time is key! We are all trying to get a few hours, even minutes, for some “me time”. I saved several hours of time by handing the research over to Brittany. It was like having a personal assistant planning my Disney trip. I highly recommend reaching out to her for your vacation needs.
