Embrace the Magic: Virtual Run Disney Princess Weekend Races
In a world where the ordinary often prevails, there’s something genuinely enchanting about injecting a little magic into our lives. Enter the Run Disney Princess Weekend Races – a celebration of athleticism, camaraderie, and fairy tale charm. In this blog post, we delve into the wonder of the Virtual Run Disney Princess Weekend Races 2024 and how they continue to ignite the spirit of princesses and princes, wherever they may be.
I can hardly believe that my RunDisney Running Journey began exactly one year ago, at the 2023 Princess Half Marathon Weekend at Walt Disney World. Now I have filled up my entire Disney Medal Hanger! My first in-person RunDisney Race Weekend was Princess Weekend 2023, which was an incredible experience full of life lessons. Need tips for RunDisney Registration? Check out this post!

The Transition to Virtual
NOTE: When circumstances demanded a shift away from in-person gatherings in 2020, Disney didn’t let the magic fade. Instead, they waved their wand and transformed the races into a virtual spectacle. Participants from around the globe could now embark on their running adventures from the comfort of their kingdoms.
I was lucky enough to be able to participate in two events virtually to fill my season, and I am very sad to learn that, as of now – RunDisney has decided to eliminate Virtual options for all in-person races in the 2024-2025 season. They will continue to do the Virtual Summer Series as well as the new Virtual 12Ks of Christmas – but sadly, no more additional options for the rest of the season.

Creating Your Own Fairy Tale
Princess 2023 was not only my very first Disney race but also my first official 5k, 10k, Half Marathon, and Challenge attempt. I tried to go BIG! However, I could not complete the Half Marathon due to unknown health issues and ended up with a DNF, which left me devastated.
Over the last year, I have been trying to reduce my stress levels and get to the bottom of some health issues. Since that first Princess Weekend, I have completed the 5k and Half Marathon at Wine and Dine Race Weekend 2023, as well as the Virtual Disneyland 5k, 10k, Half Marathon, and Dumbo Double Dare Challenge!
I was hoping to return to Disney this year and redeem myself at the Princess Race Weekend, but the timing was not right. Instead, I continued with my training and participated in the Fairytale Challenge virtually. Mark joined me this time for moral support, and we completed the 6.1 and 13.1 miles together. We used this experience to keep our goal-oriented and get more time on our feet before our upcoming BIG adventure! Stay tuned!
What is a RunDisney Virtual Race?
A RunDisney virtual race is a running event where you can experience the excitement and wonder of Disney while clocking miles in your neighborhoods or on your favorite running routes in your own timeframe. Participants track their times, and completion is based on the honor system. Once you complete your run, you visit the finisher website to submit your finish time and download your race certificate.
You must officially register on the RunDisney site to participate. Although Virtual events do not sell out in minutes like the in-person races do, they all eventually sell out. So, if you see one you want to participate in, do not leave registration until the last minute.

What do you receive for a Virtual Race?
A key highlight of any runDisney event is the coveted race swag. Runners receive a downloadable-themed race bib, a finisher certificate, a dazzling finisher medal, and an exclusive race T-shirt – all delivered right to their doorstep. These collectible medals are a testament to your virtual journey through the Disney universe and are pretty incredible!
The shirts and medals can be delivered before the official in-person race weekend or six weeks after the races are completed. There doesn’t seem to be an official timeline, but the fine print says it’s not guaranteed to arrive until six weeks after the actual race weekend.

RunDisney Weekend Events
During a typical RunDisney weekend, you would attend the expo, check into your resort, and then rise and run at 3 AM for several consecutive days. The 5K is always the weekend’s first race, followed by the 10K and then the Half (then a Marathon if it’s Marathon Weekend). With a virtual race, you can make your schedule and do whatever you need to do to be successful and complete the distances.
Most race weekends have a challenge option. RunDisney Challenges are typically as follows –
- Disneyland Halloween Weekend, Wine and Dine Weekend, and Princess Weekend – 10k and Half Marathon on two consecutive days
- Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend – Half Marathon and Full Marathon on two consecutive days is called the Goofy Challenge or the 5k, 10k, Half Marathon, and Full Marathon on four consecutive days is called the Dopey Challenge
- Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend – 10k and Half Marathon on two straight days is called the Dumbo Double Dare Challenge
- Coast to Coast – when you run a 10 miler or longer – one race in WDW and one in DL during the same calendar year.
- Springtime Surprise Weekend – 5k, 10k, and 10 miler on three consecutive days
I decided to do the Princess Half Marathon Weekend 2024 – Fairytale Challenge which consists of running the 10K and the Half Marathon on two consecutive days. In my experience, my Virtual Box arrived 3 weeks before the official race weekend. I did not open my box until I completed the distances, and I still chose to run the distances on the same weekend everyone ran in person to keep myself accountable.
The 10K Swag:
The 10K is 6.2 miles with a minimum of a 16-minute mile pace. The short-sleeve shirt and medal feature a simplistic Rapunzel, with lots of colorful details. My favorite part is the ribbon which features her long hair, and her pal, Pascal – plus the sun spins! The sleeve of each shirt also features the RunDisney logo, and the back of the shirts showcases all of the event sponsors.

The Half Marathon Swag:
The Half Marathon is 13.1 miles with a minimum 16-minute mile pace. The short-sleeve shirt and medal feature The Princess and the Frog’s Tiana, and the trumpet playing alligator, Louis. I love the vibrant colors and the fact that Louis spins in a circle! One of my favorite medals yet!

Fairytale Challenge:
This year, the Fairytale Challenge featured the world phenomons themselves, Ana and Elsa of Frozen! While I don’t love the drab color of the shirt, I love that Olaf is front and center on the medal – he deserves it! The snowflake slides back and forth, but be careful not to scratch the paint on your princesses!
Mark and I completed the 6.1 miles at one of our favorite local parks and went on to complete the 13.1 miles on the beautiful and very hilly Pinellas Trail! We climbed ten overpasses, so it felt like we were at Disney! I have only been running since July of 2022 and never saw myself filling an entire medal rack in a little over a year. But here we are!
You can buy the same Disney Medal Rack that I have and love from Etsy!

Tips and Tricks for a Magical Run:
For those embarking on their first runDisney Virtual Race, a few tips can help ensure a memorable and enjoyable experience. Planning a Disney-themed playlist, dressing up in costume, and incorporating a touch of Disney magic into the route are just a few ways to make the run extra special. Don’t forget to capture the moments – share your race day joy with fellow participants and Disney enthusiasts alike. I really enjoy several RunDisney Facebook groups and podcasts and they offer a lot of motivation.
Community of Magic: Connecting with Disney Fans
While the races may be virtual, the sense of community is real. Social media platforms show photos of runners in their finest royal attire, sharing triumphs and cheering on fellow participants. Virtual cheer squads offer encouragement from afar, reminding everyone that, even in solitude, they’re part of something much larger – a global kingdom united by the love of running and Disney magic.
As participants lace up their running shoes and embark on virtual adventures, they’re not just chasing personal bests – they’re writing their fairy tales, one stride at a time. So, remember, whether you’re a seasoned royal racer or a first-time princess, the magic is within you. All you have to do is believe.
Embrace the magic, and happy running!
