Hidden Gem on the Gulf
There’s something magical about discovering a local spot that just feels like Florida. For us, that place is John’s Pass Village & Boardwalk in Madeira Beach. We’ve been coming here for over a decade, ever since we first moved to Florida, and no visit is complete without a stop at our favorite local hangout: Pirates Pub N Grub.

Why We Love John’s Pass & Pirates Pub N Grub in Madeira Beach
We fell in love with Pirates Pub N Grub the first time we wandered into John’s Pass. Ten years later, it’s still our go-to. This laid-back pirate-themed pub has some of the best views in all of Madeira Beach, perched right on the water with a prime spot for people-watching and dolphin-spotting. Whether you’re sitting at the bar or grabbing a table on the deck, the vibe is always chill, welcoming, and 100% Florida.
The menu has something for everyone, with fresh seafood, handhelds, and small bites perfect for sharing. Some of our favorites include the hush puppies, the grouper sandwich, and their rotating daily specials that keep things interesting. But what truly keeps us coming back is their version of the Painkiller—a tropical blend of rum, cream of coconut, pineapple, and orange juice, topped with fresh nutmeg. It’s THE Florida cocktail in our book, and Pirates makes it just right every time.
Over the years, we’ve watched sunsets from their deck and spotted hundreds of dolphins. Plus, we’ve met up with friends and family to introduce them to one of our favorite places. It’s always a good time!

Why Supporting Local Matters—Especially Now
Supporting small, local businesses has always been important to us. It feels even more meaningful in the aftermath of the devastating 2024 hurricane season, which impacted so many Gulf Coast communities.
John’s Pass and Pirates Pub N Grub, like many other beloved coastal spots, faced tough times—but the community spirit here is strong. Every visit and every meal helps these resilient businesses keep doing what they do best: welcoming locals and visitors with great food and cold drinks.

What Is John’s Pass?
John’s Pass Village & Boardwalk is a historic fishing village turned lively waterfront destination, located in beautiful Madeira Beach on Florida’s Gulf Coast. It was created in 1848 by a powerful hurricane that carved a natural pass through the barrier island—Captain John Levique was the first to sail through it, giving the pass its name.
Today, John’s Pass is a vibrant mix of local shops, restaurants, bars, and attractions, all connected by a charming wooden boardwalk that hugs the water. You’ll find everything from beachwear boutiques and saltwater taffy to jet ski rentals, sunset cruises, and fishing charters. It’s the kind of place where you can spend an entire day and never run out of things to do—or reasons to come back.
Make It a Day at the Pass
After 10 years of visits, John’s Pass and Pirates Pub N Grub still hold a special place in our hearts. It’s more than just a spot on the map—it’s part of our Florida story. Whether you’re a local looking for a new favorite hangout or a visitor seeking the perfect slice of Gulf Coast charm, we can’t recommend it enough.
And don’t forget to order a Painkiller. Trust us.
John’s Pass is definitely a must! It’s been a long time since I’ve visited it. It’s time I go back and the Pirates Pub N Grub sounds like a great place to start.
