Surviving and Thriving at Disney & Universal Studios in the Florida Summer Heat
I love visiting the parks in summer. Yes, it’s hot—but summer often means smaller crowds, which translates to shorter wait times for rides and dining. If you plan smart and stay cool, it can be one of the most laid-back and rewarding times to visit!

If you’re planning a trip to Walt Disney World or Universal Orlando during the summer, you’re in for a mix of magic, thrills—and serious heat. Florida’s summer months bring sunshine, afternoon storms, and humidity that feels like a hug from a hot, wet towel. But don’t worry! With a little preparation and plenty of sunscreen, you can thoroughly enjoy everything the parks have to offer while staying cool and comfortable.
After many summers spent exploring Cinderella Castle, sipping Butterbeer, and running between lightning delays, I’ve gathered all the best tips and tricks to help you conquer a summer vacation to Disney and Universal like a pro.

1. Start Early (and Take a Midday Break)
The best way to beat the heat is to arrive at park opening (or earlier if you can rope drop). Morning hours are cooler, crowds are lower, and you’ll be amazed how much you can get done before noon. Consider heading back to your hotel for a nap, swim, or indoor lunch from 1–4 p.m., then return in the evening when it cools off again. Summer nights (after the storms pass) in the parks are gorgeous!

2. Hydrate Like It’s Your Job
Florida heat can be sneaky. You may not feel how much you’re sweating in the humidity, so dehydration hits fast. Bring a refillable water bottle (we love to carry a satchel just for our water), and know that any quick-service location at both Disney and Universal will give you free ice water—just ask!
Pro Tip: Bring electrolyte packets to add to your bottle during the day and always keep a water bottle with you.

3. Dress Smart for the Weather
I know you want to bound as your favorite character and look cute for IG, but don’t put yourself at risk in the heat. Lightweight, moisture-wicking clothes are a must. Choose breathable fabrics, sunscreen-friendly hats, and comfortable shoes that can handle getting wet. Yes, you will get rained on and/or sweat through everything, so pack extras if you can.
I have a full list of Theme Park Essentials on my Amazon Storefront!
My go-to summer theme park outfit: running leggings or a skirt, an athletic tank, a visor, a cooling towel, and quick-dry sneakers with good socks.
P.S. Bring ziploc bags to put your valuables in if you are caught in a downpour!

4. Pack Your Own Cooling Arsenal
A few summer survival tools we swear by:
- Cooling towels (wet and snap them to activate)
- Portable handheld fans (battery or USB-rechargeable)
- Neck fans (surprisingly powerful and hands-free)
- Misting fans (great for little ones—or grown-ups who melt easily)
- Travel-size sunscreen (and deodorant) for reapplying every few hours
Pack all of this in a lightweight park bag or backpack with room for snacks, ponchos, and shoe covers.

5. Know the Storm Schedule
Florida’s famous afternoon thunderstorms usually roll in between 2–5 p.m. (but of course, they are unpredictable). They’re fast and dramatic—but rarely all-day events. Watch the radar in the park app or on your phone, and use this time to hit indoor attractions, shop, or relax under cover. Most rides close due to lightning, so plan to ride your outdoor coasters early in the day to avoid disappointment. Remember – when thunder roars, go indoors.
Don’t let the rain ruin your fun. Bring cheap ponchos or lightweight rain jackets, and consider flip-flops or Crocs during stormy hours to avoid soggy socks.

6. Book Indoor Dining & Attractions Strategically
Plan air-conditioned escapes into your schedule:
- At Disney, attractions like Carousel of Progress, Spaceship Earth, or Mickey’s PhilharMagic offer a nice break from the sun.
- At Universal: cool off in The Bourne Stuntacular, the Hogwarts Express (between parks), or Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts
- Book table service dining around the hottest part of the day for a guaranteed indoor break. Places like The Leaky Cauldron at Universal or Skipper Canteen at Magic Kingdom are immersive and delicious.

7. Take Advantage of Mobile Order & Lightning Lane / Express Pass
Avoid waiting in long lines under the sun. Use:
- Disney’s Lightning Lanes to skip the standby lines for popular rides.
- Universal Express Pass (if it’s in your budget) to cut down wait times.
- Mobile ordering for food at both resorts to save time and avoid waiting in outdoor queues.
Lines for food can be especially brutal in summer heat—mobile order and pick up in the shade.
8. Stay on Property (If You Can)
Resorts with easy park access and amenities make midday breaks easy. Bonus perks:
- Disney Resort guests can enter parks early.
- Universal Premier Hotels include free Unlimited Express Pass.
- Pools at both resort areas are themed, shady, and perfect for recharging before a second round of thrills.
We love staying at Disney or Universal hotels in the summer—great pools, good dining, and a cool vibes.

9. Plan for Pace, Not Perfection
Florida summers will slow you down—and that’s okay. Prioritize your must-dos, and build in time for relaxing and cooling off. You’ll enjoy the trip much more if you accept that you won’t do everything in one go. That’s just an excuse to come back again!
One of my favorite ways to slow down: grab a Dole Whip or Butterbeer and find a shady bench to people-watch for a bit. Some of the best moments in the parks aren’t rides—they’re just being present.
10. Don’t Forget the Magic Is Still There
Another great reason I love summer visits? Disney and Universal often roll out special summer promotions, especially for Florida residents or guests staying on property. From discounted park tickets and hotel rates to dining deals and limited-time merchandise, there are some amazing ways to save if you know when to look. Keep an eye out for seasonal offers—you might be surprised how affordable a summer theme park getaway can be!
Yes, it’s hot. Yes, it might rain. But there’s still magic around every corner. Whether you’re watching fireworks from Main Street or riding Hagrid’s Motorbike Adventure at sunset, Florida summer magic hits differently. And with these tips, you’ll stay cool, hydrated, and ready for all the memories.
If you need help planning your Disney or Universal summer getaway (let’s face it, it’s Hot in Florida until late Fall, sometimes into Winter), I can assist with everything from booking hotels to selecting the best park days. Just reach out—I’ve done it all in flip-flops and 90% humidity!
☀️ Stay cool out there!

Back in the day, I was an expert at getting around the Magi Kingdom on a hot day. I knew the route to take that led you through the shops to get a bit of cool are, the shadiest side of the streets, and which rides would get the maximum a/c.
