Spotlight on Coppertail Brewing Co
In today’s climate, we’ve sadly seen too many beloved small businesses and breweries close their doors. That’s why we want to make it a priority to spotlight places we love—places that bring something unique, creative, and special to our community. Coppertail Brewing Co. in Ybor City is one of those gems we can’t help but rave about.
For us, it’s an easy choice to stop by Coppertail when we’re in the area—especially after a shopping trip to the Tampa IKEA, which just so happens to be right across the street. Whether it’s a casual date afternoon, a quick stop to grab a few beers for home, or a chance to enjoy their taproom, Coppertail has become one of our favorite Tampa stops.

The Story Behind Coppertail Brewing Co
Coppertail Brewing Co. opened its doors in 2014, founded by Kent Bailey and Casey Hughes. Their mission was simple: to create high-quality, flavorful beer right here in Tampa Bay, while embracing the spirit of craft brewing.
The name “Coppertail” comes from a whimsical sea monster imagined by Kent’s young daughter—an underwater creature with a shimmering copper-colored tail that lurks just off Florida’s coast. This fun and mysterious legend has become an integral part of the brewery’s personality, inspiring not just the name, but also the playful, slightly edgy branding you see on their labels and walls.

The Artwork and Murals
One of the most distinctive features of Coppertail is its artwork. Murals, quirky illustrations, and bold label designs bring that mysterious “Coppertail” sea monster lore to life. Local artists play a big role in the brewery’s visual identity, making it a feast for the eyes as much as for the taste buds.
The Beers, Ciders, and Sours
Coppertail’s tap list is a beautiful mix of staples and experimental brews. Local favorites like Free Dive IPA, Unholy Trippel, and Night Swim Porter have earned their place as year-round offerings, while their rotating seasonal releases keep things fresh and exciting. They also venture beyond beer with ciders and sours that appeal to those looking for something a little different.
Every visit to the taproom brings new options to try—whether you’re a hop-head, a dark beer lover, or someone who prefers something fruity and tart.

Must-Try Coppertail Favorites
If you’re not sure where to start, here are a few fan favorites worth ordering:
- Free Dive IPA – A bright, hoppy, citrus-forward IPA that’s one of Coppertail’s most recognizable beers.
- Unholy Trippel – A bold Belgian-style ale with fruity notes and a higher ABV, perfect for sipping.
- Night Swim Porter – Smooth, roasty, and chocolatey with just the right amount of bitterness.
- Florida Special Lager – Light, crisp, and made for hot Florida days.
- Seasonal Sours & Ciders – Rotating options with fun, fruity flavors for something refreshing and unique.
Food and Atmosphere
The taproom isn’t just about beer. Their food menu pairs perfectly with a pint, offering elevated pub favorites, shareable snacks, and dishes made with fresh, high-quality ingredients. From soft pretzels with beer cheese to savory sandwiches, you’ll find plenty of bites to keep you lingering over another round.
The atmosphere blends industrial charm with an artistic soul. The building itself is a historic 100-year-old warehouse, giving it an authentic Ybor City vibe.

Behind the Scenes – Brewery Tours
Want to see where the magic happens? Coppertail offers guided brewery tours that allow you to learn about the brewing process, the company’s history, and the stories behind some of their most popular beers. Tours typically include samples along the way, and it’s a fantastic way to connect with the craftsmanship that goes into every pint.
From Brewery to Grocery Stores
While there’s nothing like enjoying a beer straight from the Ybor taproom, you can also find Coppertail Brewing Co. in grocery stores throughout Florida. It’s an excellent way to bring a taste of Tampa’s craft beer scene home—and to introduce friends and family to a local favorite.
Why Supporting Local Matters
Breweries like Coppertail Brewing Co. are more than places to grab a drink—they’re hubs for community, creativity, and craftsmanship. Every pint you enjoy, every six-pack you pick up from your local shop, helps keep these small businesses alive. It keeps people employed, supports local agriculture and suppliers, and ensures Tampa Bay continues to be a destination for great beer.
In a time when too many small businesses have been forced to close, our continued support is what helps keep places like Coppertail brewing for years to come. So skip the chain restaurants and support local. You’ll be glad you did!
I couldn’t agree more – support local wherever you live!
