Let’s talk about cruises! This past January, I went on my very first cruise aboard the Royal Caribbean Utopia of the Seas, and in March, I toured The Wish on Disney Cruise Line. This week, I am about to embark on another new adventure on my first cruise with Virgin Voyages’ Valiant Lady, and you know I will tell you all about it when I return.  But in the meantime, I thought I would help anyone interested in going on a cruise figure out the best cruise line to plan your next escape!

How to Choose the Right Cruise for Your Vacation

Planning a cruise vacation can feel a bit like staring at a vast ocean—you’re excited to dive in, but you might not know where to start. With so many cruise lines, itineraries, and ship styles to choose from, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. That’s where I come in!

As a travel advisor, my goal is to help you find the perfect cruise tailored to you, your travel style, interests, budget, and dream destinations. Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned sailor looking for a fresh experience, here’s how we work together to find the right fit.

Start With These Key Questions:

Before booking, it helps to think about your travel priorities. Here are some questions I’ll ask you (and you should ask yourself) as we explore your cruise options:

  1. What’s your ideal destination?
    • Caribbean, Alaska, Europe, Asia, South Pacific, or a river cruise through France?
  2. How many days do you want to be away?
    • Short getaway (3–5 nights), week-long adventure, or extended voyage?
  3. When are you looking to travel?
    • Are your dates flexible? Would you consider shoulder season for lower prices or fewer crowds?
  4. What’s your budget (roughly)?
    • Don’t worry—I’ll help you get the most value for your money, including perks and promotions.
  5. Are you traveling with kids, as a couple, or with a group?
    • Some ships cater to families, others to adults-only experiences. Some do both exceptionally well.
  6. What kind of onboard vibe do you want?
    • Laid-back and casual? Elegant and upscale? Party atmosphere? Wellness-focused? Educational and immersive? Adults-Only?
  7. What’s most important to you onboard?
    • Fine dining? Entertainment? Spa and fitness? Kid-friendly programming? Nightlife? Quiet spaces?
  8. Do you want a more all-inclusive experience or a pay-as-you-go style?
    • Some cruise lines include more (drinks, gratuities, Wi-Fi), while others are more à la carte.

Details to Consider When Choosing a Cruise:

Once we’ve narrowed down your style and preferences, we can look at the details that matter most. Here’s what I help you evaluate:

1. Cruise Line Personality

Each cruise line has its own “personality.” For example:

  • Royal Caribbean – action-packed ships with activities for all ages
  • Disney Cruise Line – magical for families (but adults love it, too!)
  • Viking or AmaWaterways – river cruises for more immersive, cultural travel
  • Virgin Voyages – adults-only, trendy, and all-inclusive feel

2. Ship Size

  • Mega ships offer endless entertainment, dining, and activities (think water slides, Broadway shows).
  • Mid-size ships strike a balance—more variety with a more relaxed vibe.
  • Small ships or river cruises offer intimate, port-focused experiences.

3. Cabin Type

From budget-friendly interior cabins to balcony suites and luxurious penthouses—your cabin is your home base. I’ll help you weigh the options, especially if you want:

  • A view
  • Extra space
  • Special concierge perks

4. Itinerary & Ports

The cruise should take you where you want to go and offer enough time in port to explore. Some things to consider:

  • Are the ports places you’ve always wanted to see?
  • Do you prefer more time at sea or lots of stops?
  • Would you enjoy shore excursions, or do you want to explore independently?

5. Travel Logistics

I’ll help you factor in:

  • Embarkation and return ports
  • Flights and pre/post-cruise stays
  • Travel insurance
  • Required documents or visas

Travel Advisor Tip:

The best cruise isn’t always the one you think you want—it’s the one that fits your lifestyle. That’s why working with a travel advisor can make all the difference. I help you compare options, decode the fine print, and match you with the cruise experience that delivers the most value and joy.

Ready to Set Sail?

Choosing the right cruise should feel exciting, not stressful. Whether you dream of sipping wine on a Mediterranean balcony, spotting glaciers in Alaska, or relaxing with a tropical breeze in the Caribbean, I’m here to help you find your perfect voyage.

Let’s chat and start planning a cruise that checks all your boxes (and maybe adds a few surprises you didn’t even know you wanted!).

  1. Which is most like the Pacific Princess where I can get a pina colada from Isaac, play checkers with Julie and fall in love with Gopher in 3 days? I’m showing my age with that reference. 😛
